I consider a construction as something that is designed and made by hand. My books that are a one of a kind or a unique are constructions no matter the form they take. They can be self contained as a traditional book form with pages and covers or they can be more sculptural in form with wraps and boxes to house the book.My only criteria are that they are original and, as an artist I have the privilege of calling them whatever I want to call them! Most of my book constructions are my own design with the exception of those which are based on existing forms or formats. My subject matter is where I have the most creative process. I like issue oriented subject matter. The bottom line--it gives me license to wail at the world in a less objectionable and verbal manner and I can voice my opinions without my soapbox. And man, I do love a good soapbox. (I have several in different colors). Opinions are not a thing for which I am at a loss. I got a million! I like constructions because I can use all the media at hand and I am not locked into one format for illustration. Whatever is at hand is what I use:printmaking, collage, watercolor, acrylic, pop ups, folds, cuts, tears: its endless. I find the more I work the more ideas pop into my head. I am not at a loss for ideas only the time to do them!
