About Deconstructed Books

Books/ deconstructed
By my definition, a deconstruction is one that is changed in such a manner that it can no longer be restored to the original without a great deal of time and effort.  Don’t bother looking….it isn’t in the dictionary. All the parts are there, just rearranged. Like a building that is demolished and the bricks are all used again to make another more modern structure. (I like to think of myself as a rehabber. Taking something and changing it and hopefully enhancing it.) I wanted something that was sculptural in nature and would hang on a wall. A book without a bookcase you might say. Perfect, just what I was looking for. Followed by my next idea, which was using the grid, I love grids! The organization, the compulsion, the way out of whack way of doing something … yeah. These books are cut by hand a few pages at a time between the line lengths so they are still readable. Then placed in a permanent open position. There are never two alike, what you see is what you get. I choose the books I deconstruct by title and always a new book (don’t know, another little quirk of mine.) If it’s a series, the title is similar in context. If it’s an installation, all titles are the same (strange looks when I hit the bookstore!) I can explore this form just so long before repeating myself, I am sure. After all, how many ways can you cut and fold? We’ll see, won’t we? Lately I have combined cutting with folding and changing the order in an installation. It’s fun and quirky and I can play, again with the structure. The magic and key word is PLAY!
